Reluctantly founded as an offshoot of RCA Records by Olav Wyper, Neon was a very short-lived concept lasting just over a year. In that time it signed or licensed an eclectic mix of progressive rock and jazz artists before being folded by RCA due to lack of sales and success. Olav himself did not even really ‘believe’ in the label and so it and its signings suffered from promotional neglect.
Most of the signings were mere one-release-wonders who sold miniscule quantities of their albums and never released anything again, disappearing into obscurity or moving on to other projects and ensuring future rarity, collectability and with prices to match.
Easily as collectable as legendary Vertigo ‘swirls’, in some cases one could argue that a few of the Neon LPs are even rarer. There are some real gems to be collected, particularly in the all important ‘near mint’ or ‘unplayed’ categories.
