Island

ILPS9081 Traffic-label ILPS-9101-Blodwyn-Pig-label-1st

Founded in 1959 by Chris Blackwell and Graeme Goodall in Jamaica, primarily to release reggae artists, the label relocated to the UK in 1962. Island capitalised on the growing progressive rock scene in the late 60s releasing LPs by Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Traffic and Free amongst many others.

The label design changed frequently in the 60s, with pink being a predominant colour for the label. The label employed various various graphic devices including a stylised black and orange ‘eye’ symbol, which then changed to a mono version centred in the label, then a white ‘i’. The final design featuring pink was the early 70s pink rim palm tree design. Some highly collectable records from the late 60s and early 70s now command high prices in mint condition.
